Drivers all over the country exhibit dangerous behavior every day. From texting while driving to running red lights, there are numerous hazardous behaviors you could encounter on the road. But which type of dangerous driving is the most likely to cause an accident?
According to a recent analysis, speeding might be the most dangerous type of driving and one of the most common factors in car accidents.
Researchers from the University of Waterloo examined data taken from on-board devices from 28 million car trips to find their conclusion. They examined a variety of dangerous driving behaviors including speeding, hard braking, hard acceleration and hard cornering.
Based on this data, the likelihood of a crash increases the more with one type of aggressive driving. Their analysis revealed that speeding was the strongest predictor of a crash. While more research is needed to confirm these results, the analysis revealed a strong correlation between speeding and car accidents.
Why Is Speeding So Dangerous?
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was a factor in 26 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2017. The NHTSA cautions drivers who speed are at a higher risk of losing control of their vehicle. Speeding can also reduce the effectiveness of protective equipment and increases the degree of crash severity.
If you come across a driver who appears to be speeding, let them pass you and give them plenty of space. Adjust your driving accordingly and do not be tempted to engage in risky behavior.
Learning about the dangers of speeding can help you avoid one of these serious accidents. Based on this data, faster certainly does not mean safer.
