Common occupational diseases that you need to watch out for

Many Oklahoma workers are susceptible to occupational diseases. While some of these diseases aren’t preventable, there are some things that you can do to lessen the likelihood of them having a significant impact on your life if you treat them right away. These are some of the most common occupational diseases that you need to watch out for.

Musculoskeletal disorders

Repetitive movements in the workplace cause a lot of musculoskeletal disorders. These disorders can include tendinitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. Working for long periods of time and not taking adequate breaks can make these conditions worse.

Skin-related issues

It’s not uncommon for many people to develop some sort of skin issue because of work-related conditions. They sometimes can receive workers’ compensation benefits because of it. These conditions can include sunburn, eczema, dermatitis or even skin cancer. Skin-related issues are often caused by exposure to a certain chemical for extended periods of time.

For those that develop respiratory diseases, they tend to have difficulty breathing on a regular basis. COPD and asthma are some of the most common occupational diseases that affect the respiratory system. Exposure to certain chemicals and irritants can cause these types of diseases

Mental-health issues

A stressful or unsupportive workplace can cause mental-health issues. These types of issues can range from post traumatic stress disorder to depression. Mental-health issues can greatly affect an individual’s overall quality-of-life and make it difficult for them to continue to work or perform everyday tasks.
