Most drivers understand that the road is a dangerous place. Of course, these dangers come from many different sources, with some posing more of a continued problem than others.

But what are the most common causes of crashes, anyway?

Distracted driving

Markets Insider discusses the most common causes that lead to crashes. At the top of the list, perhaps unsurprisingly: distracted driving. This umbrella term covers a large range of actions, such as drowsy driving and texting while driving. While many people engage in distracted driving behaviors, all it takes is one instance of distraction to get into a terrible crash.

Intoxicated driving

Intoxicated driving takes up the next spot. It is a leading cause of accidents and has remained in that position for decades. Unfortunately, despite the enormous crackdown on drunk driving and the public’s general consensus that it is dangerous and foolish, people continue to do it.

Reckless driving

Reckless driving, including breaking the speed limit, follows. This can include speeding, aggressive driving and lane changing recklessly, which can all lead to collisions with other cars.

Poor weather conditions

Bad weather conditions make up another major category. Sometimes, people will hit the road in spite of weather advisories. This often happens during winter storms or storms that include strong winds and large amounts of rain. Due to poor visibility and terrain conditions, cars can easily end up crashing into each other or running off the road entirely.

Driving at night

Finally, night driving is also a common cause. Due to low visibility, it is much harder for drivers to avoid dangers or spot them in time to react.

Maintaining vigilance when driving and deciding not to drive when it is not safe to do so are the main ways to help combat these risks.
