What Does A Brain Injury Feel Like?
Perhaps the most surprising thing about a brain injury is that often the victim doesn’t know they have one. Children and elderly adults are frequently unknowing victims of head injuries. They can slip and fall in a public place, get up and carry on as if nothing happened, when in reality, they have suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI).
A TBI can happen during a car or truck accident, slipping on wobbly stairs or a wet floor, in sports or even at the workplace. Concussions are not all the same. In fact, there are six different types of concussions. Depending on which part of the brain is affected, the symptoms will be different.
Symptoms Of A Concussion: What To Look For
The symptoms of a head injury can be hard to see right away because the person can also be in pain from another injury – such as a broken arm or torn ligament in the knee – or they may be in shock. This is why getting medical attention right away is so important. If you or someone close to you has hit their head in a motor vehicle accident, at work, or by slipping or tripping and falling in a public place, here is what to look for:
- Momentary or prolonged loss of consciousness
- Neck pain, headache and often pupil dilation and vision problems
- Hearing problems
- Trouble walking or balancing and feeling “dizzy”
- Nausea or vomiting
- Slurred or labored speech
- Memory loss – not remembering the accident or what happened right before it
Most people who suffer concussions recover in two to three weeks. For some people, it can take months to fully recover. Sadly, a few victims will never fully recover. There is legal recourse for spouses and families who have lost a loved one in an accident that involved a serious TBI.
